Nishant Sindhu is an Indian professional cricketer who came to prominence in February 2022 as an integral member of the Indian squad that had won the 2022 ICC (International Cricket Council) Under-19 Cricket World Cup. This was India’s 4th successive appearance in the final of the tournament after losing efforts in 2016 and 2020 and a winning campaign in 2018. This was also the 5th time that India had lifted the trophy after victorious campaigns in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2018. A couple of months before this, in December 2021, Nishant was a part of the Indian squad that had triumphed at the 2021 ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Under-19 Asia Cup. This was the 8th time that India had won this competition out of the 9 editions that had been played.

He had first come into the spotlight on the Indian domestic scene during the 2017-18 season when he had produced a stellar all-round show in the Vijay Merchant Trophy (national under-16 cricket championship) where he had scored 280 runs and taken 16 wickets. It was under his captaincy that Haryana had defeated Jharkhand in the final to lift the tile.
In the opening match of the 2021 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup, against the United Arab Emirates, he was run out for a ‘diamond duck’ (a situation where a batter is dismissed for zero without even facing a single ball). The ill-fortune seemed to haunt him throughout the rest of the tournament as he did not have any performances of note with either bat or ball in any of the matches in the tournament.
After India’s opening game of the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, against South Africa, regular captain Yash Dhull and 5 other members of the Indian squad had been tested positive for COVID-19. This meant that all of those players had to miss out on the next (and last) 2 matches of the group stage, against Ireland and Uganda. Nishant was then chosen by the team management to captain India in these 2 games.
In India’s last group stage match, against Uganda, he had bowled a sensational spell of 4/19 in just 4.4 overs to help India bundle out Uganda for just 79 runs and defeat them by 326 runs. This was the second-biggest victory margin in the history of Youth ODIs.
Soon after the end of this match, he had been tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to miss the quarter-final match against Bangladesh. He had recovered in time for the semi-final match against Australia and had produced a solid all-around performance, first scoring 12 runs not out in 10 balls to help India reach a total of 290/5. With the ball, he had recorded figures of 2/25 in 6 overs to help India limit Australia to a total of 194 runs.
In the final match, against England, he had come out to bat with India’s score at 95/3 which soon became 97/4. India’s chase of 190 runs could have gone either way from this situation but Nishant seemed to have saved his best for the last. He went on to score 50 runs from 54 balls and even though a few wickets fell from the other end, he had stayed put at one end to ensure that the chase was successfully completed by the 48th over.
